Richard Rhys O’Brien is the author of two recent books on Margaret Lloyd George (the first President of the London Welsh Centre, 1921-1922)
“The Woman Who Helped Win the War - The Welfare Campaigns of Margaret Lloyd George, 1914-1918” describes her 6 major campaigns during WWI: for her Welsh Troops Fund; the British & Foreign Sailors' Society; Welsh Army recruitment; Food & Home Economy; Temperance; Health & Social Welfare. It also looks at her campaigning for women, churches and Wales.
“The Campaigns of Margaret Lloyd George - The wife of the Prime Minister 1916-1922” is an in-depth analysis of her public life as wife of Prime Minister David Lloyd George, bringing to the fore her active political campaigning during his peacetime Premiership from 1916 to 1922, an unprecedented role and virtually unmatched by the spouse of a Prime Minister. Richard traces her campaigning on the hustings around the country and also the many places in London where she campaigned, from Romford to Hanwell, Hampstead to Camberwell, and the streets of Central London.
In all this she was supported by Richard’s grandfather, the Rev. J.T. Rhys, her private secretary at No. 10 and himself an active member of the London Welsh Community. The archive of letters and speeches he left behind has given Richard a perfect launch pad to dig deeper in the life of Margaret Lloyd George.
