Wales Week in London, the programme of events held in London around the time of St David’s Day each year to celebrate and promote everything that’s great about Wales, is delighted to announce that Velindre is its Official Charity Partner for 2019.
The highly-regarded events programme, which works closely with both the Welsh Government and the UK Government, has quickly become an integral part of Welsh promotions in the UK capital; only two years since it was first launched by two Welsh business people, Dan Langford and Mike Jordan in 2017.
2017 saw their programme include 56 different activities and events; celebrating and promoting Wales and Welsh products, culture, businesses and industry over a two-week period right across London. During February and March 2018, this jumped to 81 different events and included BAFTA Cymru, the Football Association of Wales, the Welsh Government, London Welsh Centre, National Museum of Wales, 10 Downing Street, The Shard and many others.
Dan Langford, Chair of Wales Week in London said, “The contribution we’ve seen from the such a large number of individuals and organisations to bring the event programme together has been immense; and we’ve been equally humbled by the incredible support we’ve received from both governments and our terrific sponsors. As a result, we have been thinking for some time how we can maximise the positive noise and energy created through Wales Week in London to help support the amazing work undertaken by the charity sector in Wales.
“So, we’re absolutely delighted to have selected Velindre to be our Official Charity Partner for 2019. Everyone knows about the incredible work they do in helping in the treatment of cancer and caring for those who are affected by this terrible disease; and so we’re looking forward to supporting them in any way we can.
”Our friends at Velindre are working on an exciting programme of events of their own, to take place in London during Wales Week, which we know will raise further awareness of the amazing work they do and ultimately develop engagement in their activities and contribute to their on-going fundraising.”
Andrew Morris Head of Fundraising at Velindre Cancer Centre said, “As Wales’ premier Cancer Centre we are really pleased to be chosen to partner with Wales Week in London and use the opportunity to highlight our work.
“We know that many people living in London will have had loved ones cared for and supported at Velindre, and with a new facility being created in the next few years, we are determined to achieve our goal of Victory over Cancer.
“We look forward to being involved with many of the exciting activities already planned, and working with our existing Patrons, Ambassadors and new supporters with some new additional events.”
Wales Week in London takes place across London from 23rd February to 8thMarch 2019. The new website with details of next year’s programme of events will be launched in October www.walesweek.london
EDITORS NOTES
Velindre is Wales’ premier Cancer Centre, providing care, support and treatment to cancer patients and their families for over 60 years.
Velindre, the Hospital of Hope is the major provider of radiotherapy and other specialised anti-cancer treatments in Wales. Access to radiotherapy is critical to improving patient outcomes for cancer.
We all know of family, friends and loved ones who have been touched by cancer.
The incidence of cancer is rising by 2% each year in Wales with nearly 20,000 people diagnosed with this illness each year, and by 2020 one in two of us will develop cancer and 150,000 people will be living with a current or previous diagnosis of this disease.
However as Velindre staff strive every day to deliver the best cancer services through exceptional care, more people than ever are living with cancer – survival rates have doubled in the last 40 years through better treatments and earlier detection.
We want to lead in the delivery and development of compassionate, individualised and effective cancer care to achieve outcomes comparable with the best in the world.
Donations to Velindre are used to fund things over and above those provided by the NHS, so fundraising really does make a huge difference to patients and their families.
We aim to provide the best care, when people need us most.
